Teething refers to the process of developing teeth in your baby. In the teething phase, the first set of teeth comes through the gums. This first set of teeth is known as primary teeth. Teething usually starts at around 6 months of age of your baby, however, it may occur at anytime between 3 months and 12 months of age. Usually, the lower teeth come first and then the upper teeth which usually takes 1 to 2 months after the lower teeth is visible.
There are number of symptoms which can tell the parents if their babies are suffering from any kind of teething problems. While some of the babies do not face any problems during teething, the others are usually fussier than others at the time of teething. Although soreness and swelling in the gums are the common symptoms which are usually being observed in the babies, they also show symptoms of drooling, crying, gum redness, decreased appetite and difficulty in sleeping. Some babies also show the symptoms of mild diarrhea due to gastrointestinal reactions and some also shows red and swollen rashes on the neck, cheeks, chin and chest from the saliva’s contact with the skin. In addition to this, some babies also show the symptoms of congestion, ear infection and mild fever while teething.
There are various remedies available for teething. While natural home remedies are required to be observed when some of the symptoms are observed, it is usually advisable to consult a pediatrician, if the teething symptoms persist for a longer time. Some of the home remedies include pouring a spoon of olive oil, rubbing ginger root against the gums and using clove paste for the teeth and gums. It is also advisable to give them a healthier thing to chew, otherwise babies prefer to chew their fingers and toys around them.
